Discovering The Swiss Alps - Travel Diary With Mastercard

but many things end.

As the quote well says our adventure with Mastercard started in Italy and ended in the breathtakingly beautiful Switzerland. As in Italy, along with the not so hidden parts of the country like Gornegrat, we also tried to discover the less crammed parts which are also as amazing but more affordable. Based on Mastercard's Top Hidden Treasures Road Book the region called 'Ruinaulta' would definitely have matched the above criteria but sadly it didn't fit into our itinerary so instead we first stopped at Lavertezzo which is just an hour drive from the Italian border. It's a little picturesque village which is famous for its Lord of the Rings-like double arch stone bridge called Ponte dei Salti built in the 17th century and - like 'Ruinaulta'- for its crystal clear water which is perfect to refresh your body and soul.

MATTERHORN

There is a highlight of every vacation, ours was definitely the night that we spent at an altitude of 3100 meters in Kulmhotel Gornegrat with windows opening to the glorious Matterhorn. Gornegrat is one of those places that everyone should visit at least once in a lifetime. The mountain panorama and the glorious view of the Matterhorn are truly unforgettable even if the ticket to Europe’s highest open-air cog railway which brings passengers direct from Zermatt station to the summit of the Gornergrat is found expensive even by the Swiss. But as I said, the experience is worth every penny. After watching the sunset from the window of Europe’s highest-altitude hotel, the following morning at 4:30 we put on our hiking boots and descended to the nearby glacier lake called Riffelsee to watch and photograph the Europe's most famous peak lit by the first rays of sun.

On our last days we got closer and closer to the Austrian border and spent the last night of our road trip at Nira Alpina in Silvaplana, a lively trend-setting holiday resort set amongst the lakes of the Engadin just a few kilometers from St. Moritz. On our way there we experienced the best of Switzerland breathtaking landscapes. We passed the Alps through Firkapass and then through Julierpass. We also walked through Goms Bridge which is a suspension bridge crossing the young Rhone at a height of 92 meters and had a picnic at a nearby green meadow of Grindelwald. During our time in Switzerland we tried to see as many things as we could but we still missed out so much. I'm still amazed how a country can be so rich of natural beauty. We will definitely be back soon so let me know if you have some hints what we should see the next time!
